Thank you for saying it out loud. I work with a lot of clients that don’t realize they can choose. It’s woven into our language that we are our trauma, illnesses, and emotions.

It’s one of the reasons I appreciate Irish so much because they say “the sadness is on me.” “The hunger is on me.” Highlighting that these emotions are not who we are but something that is currently happening to us.

Just yesterday I was working with a client who was stuck in the idea that there was only two choices in life. I spoke a lot about how there is always a choice but you have to choose to be ready for that. That sometimes making a different choice doesn’t always mean it’s easier or faster because it’s unknown and different. Which is scarier. Sometimes it involves choosing to sacrifice the “comfort” of living as the victim. Down the road you realize it wasn’t a sacrifice but the right choice.
